For the last seven days, polls have been running on three social media platforms. The question on everyone’s mind is, “If the election for Burlington’s next Mayor were being held today, who would you vote for?”
What did we learn?
Be careful when setting up a poll on NextDoor, there ended up being two polls.
About the election?
The good news is that up to 599 people participated. We used each social media platform’s internal polling tools. This makes it easy for people to answer the poll question. People can answer only once per login on a given platform. Some people may have taken the poll more than once on different platforms and/or with different logins on the same platform.
We make no claims about the accuracy of these social media polls.
NextDoor
NextDoor is a platform where people use real names or real business names. Anonymity is limited, making NextDoor a polite place for discussions (usually). The Burlington Votes Group on NextDoor has approximately 400 members. Click here to join the group

Reddit is its own world. Most users are anonymous, and comments range from intelligent and articulate to… Many people who comment on Reddit support the city, our current mayor, and councillors. Google puts the average age of a Reddit user at 23. You can join the BurlingtonON subreddit, with a reported 65,000 Burlingtonians, and the FocusBurlington subreddit.
For starters, not many people follow Focus Burlington on Instagram. According to Google, the majority of Instagram users are 18 to 34 years old. Following us is easy, and you might feel younger, here’s a link: https://www.instagram.com/focus_burlington/

Conclusions?
It’s a close race. There’s work to be done. Remember to donate, put a sign on your lawn and volunteer.
Only one poll matters. Make a plan to vote – early, over the internet, or on October 26th. Be careful: online voting ends on October 23rd. Voting information is available here: https://myvote.burlington.ca/for-voters/voting-locations/
