Burlington, ON – After a recent series of break-and-enters in Alton Village – including one Saturday night and two last week – local residents are being urged to take extra precautions. I spoke directly with Burlington police on October 5, 2025, to clarify what homeowners should know about protecting themselves, their families, and their properties.

1 – Use of Force and Legal Consequences
Police confirmed that if a homeowner seriously injures someone attempting to break into their home, officers are legally required to lay charges. While these charges often don’t hold up in court, they still appear on your record and can impact employment background checks. It’s important to remember that being charged is not the same as being convicted, but charges remain visible until they are formally withdrawn or expunged, a process that doesn’t occur automatically.
2 – Booby-Traps Are Illegal
Police strongly caution residents against setting up any traps or devices that could harm an intruder. Only reasonable precautions are permitted – including alarms, reinforced locks, motion lights, and visible security cameras.
While cameras can’t stop a break-in, they serve as a deterrent and provide vital evidence if a theft occurs.

3 – Understanding the Crime Pattern
Police emphasized that Burlington rarely experiences “home invasions.” The recent incidents fall under break-and-enters, where suspects target unoccupied homes, garages, and vehicles rather than occupied residences.
This means the risk of direct confrontation is relatively low, though property theft remains a significant concern.
4 – Limited Police Coverage
When asked about patrol strength, one officer explained:
“There should be 16 cruisers on duty across Burlington, but most days there are only 10 to 12.”
With such limited coverage for the entire city, response times can vary considerably –underscoring the importance of community awareness and prevention.
5 – What Residents Can Do
Police recommend the following steps:
- Keep exterior lights on and ensure cameras are visible.
- Lock all entry points, including garage and backyard gates.
- Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch group or local chat.
- Report all suspicious activity – even small details can matter. Police stress that residents should not hesitate to call.
- Never confront intruders directly – call 911 immediately.
6 – Community Vigilance Matters
With Burlington’s growing population and stretched resources, local vigilance is becoming increasingly vital. Neighbours looking out for one another remains one of the most effective deterrents to crime. As the officer reminded me, prevention is our best line of defence. Cameras, lighting, communication, and community awareness can all make a difference.
We may not be “in Kansas anymore,” but Alton Village remains a close-knit community –and together, we can keep it that way.

Stay safe, Alton Village.
