2026 is already shaping up to be a pivotal year—economically, politically, and especially at the municipal level. Across the region, signs of political unrest are emerging. In Toronto and Hamilton, rising property taxes, traffic congestion, homelessness, and intensification have pushed municipal issues to the forefront of public debate. Competitive election races are beginning to take shape, and Burlington is no exception.

In response, Focus Burlington is launching a public engagement initiative ahead of the October municipal election. As part of this effort, we will host two public events designed to raise civic awareness—both about the key issues facing our city and about what it truly means to seek public office.

Tuesday, January 20, 7 PM

Thursday, February 26, 7 PM

Both events will take place at the Burlington Lions Club, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The first event will feature a panel discussion with well-known and respected community members who bring firsthand experience with local government and the work of Burlington’s mayor and council. Panellists will offer candid perspectives on how effectively our city is functioning, where progress is being made, and where improvement is needed. Their insights will be valuable not only to those considering a run for public office but also to residents seeking a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Burlington.

The second event will serve as a practical primer for anyone contemplating a run for municipal office—or interested in supporting a campaign. Attendees will be guided through the process of standing for election and running an effective campaign. Presenters will include former elected officials and experienced campaign managers, who will share real-world lessons, advice, and reflections. Even for those not planning to run, this event offers a unique opportunity to connect, network, and “rub shoulders” with individuals who may soon be Burlington’s next mayor or councillors.

Both events are free and open to all members of the Burlington community. We look forward to your participation as we work together to inform, engage, and help shape a stronger future for Burlington.
